3T is voluntarily recalling Cervélo P5 bicycles with 3T Aduro aero bars for a safety check and, if necessary, safety upgrade.

The recall includes 2012 and 2013 Cervélo P5 bicycles equipped with 3T Aduro aero handlebars. The bicycles are black with red and white stripes. “P5” is on the seat tube, “Cervélo” is on the top tube and a large “é” is on the down tube in white lettering. The handlebars consist of four major components: a base bar, which attaches to the bike; a forward extension mount, which attaches to the base bar; forearm rests and forward extension bars, which attach to the forward extension mount. The base bar is black with red and white stripes and has “3T” on the top and rear. The handlebars come with both a high and a low forward extension mount, one of which will be installed based on customer fit. Consumers can purchase an ultra-low forward extension mount separately. The words “Ultimate Performance” are on the forward extensions. The handlebars were manufactured between January 2012 and July 2012. Serial numbers for the handlebars are on a label inside the base bar under the stem cap on the rear wall. The serial number is the seven-digit number following “FM78-Basebar-.” The manufacture date code is the first four digits of the serial number in the MMYY format. Date codes for the defective handlebars range from 1201 to 1207. P5 bicycles which have already been inspected and passed at retailers are distinguished by a green sticker with an “é” on the underside of the Aduro base bar.

In the US, this recall program is being managed under the auspices of the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). You can read the CPSC/3T voluntary recall notice here.

No other 3T aerobar is part of this recall.

Who’s affected: Customers who have bicycles fitted with 3T Aduro bars should stop riding them at once and contact your local Cervélo retailer to perform a safety check. You can find your closest local retailer via the Cervélo retailer locater at http://www.cervelo.com/en/find-a-retailer.html.

How to identify the bar: The aero bar needs to be disassembled in order to identify if it is affected by the safety measures or not. Thus it is necessary to contact your local Cervélo retailer as only he is qualified to perform the check.

Questions you might ask
Yes. It is not possible to identify affected bars from the outside. The integration of the bar makes it necessary to be checked by a qualified and authorized Cervélo retailer, who is in direct contact to Cervélo in order to manage immediately exchange of base bar and/or high mount to get you back riding safely as soon as possible.

I bought my Cervélo P5 in a different country. How can I get my bike checked?
Please use the retailer locater (http://www.cervelo.com/en/find-a-retailer.html) to find out the closest help point to you. Cervélo, 3T and their partners offer the best possible service in order to sort this inconvenience for you.

3T Designs and Cervelo, along with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, have issued a safety recall on Cervelo bicycles that are equipped with 3T Designs' Aura Pro Aero Handlebars (photo, click to enlarge).

The recall issue
3T/Cervelo have determined that the bolts for the clamps attaching the extension bars to the basebars may fail. This can cause the extension to become detached during use, posing a fall hazard to the rider. One such incident has been reported to 3T, with minor injury to the rider.

How to identify the recalled handlebars (see illustration below)
1. The affected bars have armrest supports that have three width positions.
2. These aero bars come with ski-bend type extensions.
3. The armrest pads come with comfort pads which are bigger and do NOT have an embossed 3T logo (see below).

Only the 2013 Cervelo P3 with Shimano Ultegra components (below, left) and the P5 Three with SRAM Red components (below, right) were equipped with these 3T Designs aero bars. And, these bars were custom Cervelo editions. The bikes were sold in bicycle shops from September, 2012 to January, 2013. Note that standard 3T Aura Pro aero bars are NOT part of this recall.
